Frequently asked questions

You start contributing to your state pension when you begin employment or self-employment. Social security contributions are deducted from your salary or paid by self-employed individuals throughout your working life from age 18 onwards.

To qualify for a full pension, you need paid or credited contributions based on your year of birth. For those born in 1976 or later, you need 42 years of contributions, with at least 35 years being paid contributions. The pension age is 65 years for most people born after 1962.

Your pension is calculated based on your best 10 consecutive calendar years of contributions. The period considered depends on your birth year—40 years for those born 1962-1968, 41 years for 1969-1975, and 42 years for those born 1976 or later. The calculation uses your average pensionable income during those best years.

A pension provides financial security during retirement when you're no longer working. It helps maintain your quality of life, cover living expenses, and supports your desired retirement lifestyle after years of contributing to the social security system.
